Five Food Groups? Yes!!

Dinner last night was a combination of leftovers from the food we had over the weekend when our son and daughter-in-law were here. The main dish was creamed chicken with new boiled red potatoes. Then for a vegetable we had sliced tomatoes that were fresh from our garden and carrot slices, also from our own garden. The salad was lemon Jell-O mixed with ginger ale, pineapple, bananas and mini marshmallows, with a cream cheese and whipped cream topping. For the drink we had either water or 2% milk. Apple pie with ice cream or cheese was the finishing touch for the evening. The five food groups were all included in our dinner.

  • This Is Who I Think I Am

I’m a pretty quiet person. I don’t act out a lot unless I’m standing up for something I believe in. I don’t dress like everyone else does. I don’t like to wear makeup. I think that in some ways I blend in, but in others I stand out.  I used to be very closed off to being personal with people, but now I’ll tell anyone anything about myself. I like to drive fast and dangerously sometimes. I need adrenaline in my life, once in a while. I stopped doing drugs and drinking a while ago, for my boyfriend. He’s not very nice, but I love him, and he’s more understanding of me than other people have been. I’ve lived in one town my whole life and I’m kind of tired of being here. I want to leave so I can be on my own and find out who I truly am. But I’m scared.

  • Pomeranian

Dogs are considered to be the most loyal animal to human beings on earth. I had a Pomeranian in my house for the last 15 years. We used to call him Jimmy. He used to wait for us whenever we went out without taking him. When we reach home he would start wagging his tail and licking us. My dog was very cute, active and used to play a lot with me in our garden. Proper attention should be given to them regarding their food and shelter. They should be vaccinated, and their coat should be properly trimmed and taken care of. The tiny dog clothes should be soothing and easily washable so that it doesn’t irritate them. A dog collar should be worn around the neck with the address of the owner written on it.

  • Obligations Come First

After spending time Friday rehearsing for possible gigs, I spent Saturday taking a trip to see my aunt and uncle that live about fifty miles away, but not before I stopped at a fresh fruit store along the way and picked up a basket of peaches for them and a large chocolate candy bar with crystallized ginger in it. After my visit I drove home and dove into doing some much needed housework and caught up on email. Sunday was spent working at the animal shelter until late afternoon and then I concentrated on my music again until evening when I visited with my neighbors across the street. Bedtime came around eleven o’clock.

  • Start Trek is my favorite TV shows of all time because there is much more to it then meets the eye. Each show usually has a theme that involves the interactions of society on different levels or how we, as creatures of the universe, react to certain situations. Sometimes I wish that my life was like Star Trek, as it shows a world where hunger and disease has been reduced or eliminated and most forms of life are respected. There is less prejudice and hate of our fellow man and woman. People are free to do what they want without the restriction of class or society. There are true friendships on the show. The brotherhood-like friendship of Kirk and Spock and McCoy show these qualities. They would give their lives for their friends. I feel this is a valuable trait. I too would do this for some of my friends. All in all, I think it is one of the most creative, and interesting shows. Many products such as flip cell phones were first thought of on this wonderful show. Live long and Prosper!!

  • Dentist Drama

Today started out normal with the normal daily routine but my daughter did have her first check-up at the dentist. No big worries until my husband said he needed to get in also because of the pain he was having in one of his teeth. The dentist agreed to get him in last minute at the same time as my daughter. The original plan was that he would take her and I would stay home with the other kids. No deal! So off we all went. My daughter did great but trying to manage her and my other two plus my husband being in another room was a challenge. The kids all wanted to see daddy. After 2 hours we were done and had to make a mad dash to get the kids to school and make an appointment I had. Ugh. It was a long morning.

  • A Load Off My Back

Last week, I was preparing for the mother of all garage sales. Close to 100 years of old books, pictures, furniture, and other assorted miscellanea has been slowly decaying in my basement and attic – but it was finally time to sell it all. One of the ritzy estate dealers had already rifled through and gotten the real treasures, the rest could go to the bargain hunters. I had spent weeks preparing – sorting, tagging, cleaning – and Wednesday morning I felt strangely free clicking “submit” on my Craigslist ad. Not two hours later, I got an email from a not-so-ritzy estate buyer. In two shakes of a lamb’s tail, I had agreed to let him come peruse the leftovers on his offer to “buy the whole shebang.” That same afternoon, we shook on a deal – he got it all, I got a rock bottom price (but several weekends had just been freed up). In the next two days, I helped him move more than 200 boxes into the waiting trucks. Now I sit – weary yet relieved – wondering how I’m going to spend next weekend.

  • Sea Glass is My Excuse to Hang Out on the Beach

A lot of people don’t realize that Chicago is a great place to look for Sea Glass, but it is. My understanding is that the city used to dump its garbage straight into Lake Michigan well into the middle 20th century. Paper and food scraps would break down, but the glass remained. And after years or decades it gets worn down by the surf and washes up on shore. I’m lucky enough to live within walking distance from the beach in Chicago, and when the weather is nice I try to look for beach glass every single day. I don’t see it as goofing off because I’m doing serious work — looking for valuable sea glass that I can sell. But the truth is I really enjoy it. And most of the pieces I find are too precious to me to sell. So my personal collection grows. But in the meantime I get to spend time on the beach, in the sun. It’s my excuse to have a little fun and escape from city life for a little while.

  • Last night it was barbecue time!

We mostly had skewers. I prepared the meat in nice cubes well in advance. I used chicken, marinated with rosemary, garlic and lemon. Then I had beef, marinated in wine and fresh thyme, and pork, marinated in lemon, black pepper and bay leaves. I prepared a lot of wooden skewers mixing the three types of meat, plus some little pieces of peppers, onions, two kinds of sausages, bacon and lard. I cooked the skewers with my usual mix of wood and charcoal, plus some pine cones that gave a distinctive flavor to the meat. We had two kinds of salad, fried zucchini, roasted potatoes, and peppers stewed with onions and tomatoes. We washed all down with beer and wine and those still moving had apple pie and chocolate ice-cream. We finish with chilled home-made Limoncello, which is an Italian sweet and strong liqueur made with lemon rinds.
