Sea Glass is My Excuse to Hang Out on the Beach

A lot of people don’t realize that Chicago is a great place to look for Sea Glass, but it is. My understanding is that the city used to dump its garbage straight into Lake Michigan well into the middle 20th century. Paper and food scraps would break down, but the glass remained. And after years or decades it gets worn down by the surf and washes up on shore. I’m lucky enough to live within walking distance from the beach in Chicago, and when the weather is nice I try to look for beach glass every single day. I don’t see it as goofing off because I’m doing serious work — looking for valuable sea glass that I can sell. But the truth is I really enjoy it. And most of the pieces I find are too precious to me to sell. So my personal collection grows. But in the meantime I get to spend time on the beach, in the sun. It’s my excuse to have a little fun and escape from city life for a little while.

  • Last night it was barbecue time!

We mostly had skewers. I prepared the meat in nice cubes well in advance. I used chicken, marinated with rosemary, garlic and lemon. Then I had beef, marinated in wine and fresh thyme, and pork, marinated in lemon, black pepper and bay leaves. I prepared a lot of wooden skewers mixing the three types of meat, plus some little pieces of peppers, onions, two kinds of sausages, bacon and lard. I cooked the skewers with my usual mix of wood and charcoal, plus some pine cones that gave a distinctive flavor to the meat. We had two kinds of salad, fried zucchini, roasted potatoes, and peppers stewed with onions and tomatoes. We washed all down with beer and wine and those still moving had apple pie and chocolate ice-cream. We finish with chilled home-made Limoncello, which is an Italian sweet and strong liqueur made with lemon rinds.
