Sea Glass is My Excuse to Hang Out on the Beach

A lot of people don’t realize that Chicago is a great place to look for Sea Glass, but it is. My understanding is that the city used to dump its garbage straight into Lake Michigan well into the middle 20th century. Paper and food scraps would break down, but the glass remained. And after years or decades it gets worn down by the surf and washes up on shore. I’m lucky enough to live within walking distance from the beach in Chicago, and when the weather is nice I try to look for beach glass every single day. I don’t see it as goofing off because I’m doing serious work — looking for valuable sea glass that I can sell. But the truth is I really enjoy it. And most of the pieces I find are too precious to me to sell. So my personal collection grows. But in the meantime I get to spend time on the beach, in the sun. It’s my excuse to have a little fun and escape from city life for a little while.
