Where It’s At

For about six years running during middle school and high school, I went every summer to a camp for gifted kids at Drury University in Springfield, Missouri. If you’ve ever been to Springfield, you know it’s really nothing special – just a semi-southern college city – but because of that camp, I have a special attachment to the city and to the college, even though I don’t go there and don’t even live in Missouri anymore. The thing is, when I was at camp, I was surrounded by people who talked like I did, who thought like I did, who got my jokes (and I got theirs) and who liked me and wanted to spend time scribbling on posters with me at two in the morning. I’ve made some lifelong friends there. Anywhere in the world can be enjoyable when something like that happens.
